Stinging nettle has traditionally been used in folk medicine and cooking. Considered a plant of strength and health since ancient times.
Grows in sunny and partly shaded areas, often on disturbed soils. Stinging hairs cause skin irritation on contact. Best to harvest young leaves before flowering.
Harvest young leaves in early spring and early summer. Best to collect in the morning during dry weather.
Use gloves to protect from stinging hairs. Cut only the tops for quick plant regrowth.
Leaves must be scalded with boiling water or sautéed to remove sting. Can be dried for teas and infusions.
