Black cherry bark was used in Native American traditional medicine. Fruits were made into wine and sweet sauces.
Tall tree with glossy dark green leaves. Blooms in late spring with clusters of fragrant white flowers; fruits ripen by mid to late summer.
Handpicking ripe fruits from trees or the ground. Using ladders or poles to reach high branches.
Harvest when fruits turn nearly black and soft. Dry weather harvest improves shelf life.
Fruits are consumed cooked or processed due to slight toxicity when raw. Pits should be removed before preparation.

1. Wash fruits and remove pits.
2. Boil in water until soft.
3. Strain, add sugar and boil until thick.
4. Pour into sterilized bottles.
