Widely used by Native Americans as a source of food and medicine. Valued as a honey plant and ornamental shrub.
Thorny shrub or small tree with narrow leaves and profuse spring bloom. Fruits appear in late summer; drought- and poor-soil-tolerant.
Handpicking ripe fruits from shrubs or small trees. Using mesh or cloth bags to avoid bruising soft fruits.
Fruits are small, red or yellow, and ripen in late summer. Best harvested in dry weather when they detach easily from branches.
Fruits can be eaten fresh or made into jams, sauces, or fruit leather. Have a sweet-tart taste, sometimes slightly astringent — pairs well with sugar.
